Asymmetric Crypto Hedge Fund Founder Under Investigation by Tanzanian Police Following Fiancée's Mysterious Death

BroadChain has learned that Joe McCann, founder of the crypto hedge fund Asymmetric, is under investigation by authorities in Zanzibar, Tanzania, following the mysterious death of his fiancée, U.S. social media influencer Ashly Robinson, according to a CoinDesk report on April 16.

Local police have preliminarily ruled the death a suicide, stating that the couple had been involved in a heated argument before the incident.

Tanzanian authorities have confiscated McCann’s passport and ordered him to remain in the country as they re-examine the autopsy results and continue their investigation.

Robinson’s family has expressed doubts about the suicide ruling and has started a crowdfunding campaign to help cover related costs.

Notably, McCann’s Asymmetric fund, which he previously ran, sustained heavy losses in 2025 and was subsequently shut down; reports indicate its value had fallen by as much as 78% year-to-date.
