Ripple Unveils XRP Ledger Quantum-Resistant Roadmap, Aims for Full Readiness by 2028

BroadChain has learned that at 19:16 on April 21, according to Bitcoinist, Ripple unveiled a multi-phase roadmap aimed at preparing the XRP Ledger (XRPL) for quantum resistance, with the goal of achieving full readiness by 2028. This move stems from research results published earlier this month by Google Quantum AI, which indicate that the cryptographic methods relied upon by most current blockchains could be compromised by sufficiently advanced quantum computers. For XRPL, the risk is not merely theoretical, as public keys are exposed on-chain when accounts sign transactions, which could be exploited in the quantum computing era, posing a risk to accounts holding high-value assets over the long term. Ripple emphasized that XRPL already has built-in features such as native key rotation and seed-based key generation, providing a foundational path for secure migration. The roadmap is divided into four phases to be advanced in parallel: The first phase focuses on post-quantum recovery and emergency preparedness, exploring the use of quantum-resistant zero-knowledge proofs to verify ownership and securely migrate funds; the second phase, lasting until the first half of 2026, will comprehensively assess the network's quantum risks and the impact of quantum-resistant changes on performance, storage, and bandwidth; the third phase is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2026, integrating quantum-resistant signature schemes on Devnet for developer testing; the fourth phase aims to complete the full transition to quantum-resistant signatures by 2028, ensuring coordination with ecosystem partners to smoothly and securely upgrade the entire XRPL ecosystem.
